School

Abby just lost her second tooth! Her head was resting on her pillow and sleep was fast approaching when her tooth fell out. She will begin school with a huge gap in her bottom teethe; I am going to love her school picture this year!! Our kids start school in two days and I am so excited. Abby is in first grade and Zori is in Kindergarten. We just ordered Zori new glasses, back-packs are packed and ready to go with newly sharpened pencils (love that smell), and we have already lost a pair of school shoes!! I think that these are all signs that we are ready for the year and we are starting it honestly, in good Farley fashion. How to educate your kids is a big question and we have been mulling it over for the last few years. We have read books, listened to oh so many lectures on education, talked to many amazing families and Headmasters, prayed and have been blessed to be in Churches that take this responsibility seriously and preach about it unashamedly from the pulpit! We have been convinced for a long time now that it matters who teaches our kids. Who picks the curriculum? What is the world view behind the curriculum? Are the ones teaching our kids faithful Christians? Is the whole model committed to the Word of God? There where many other questions that we asked but we only came up with two possibilities for schooling after we answered all of our questions. We could home school or use private christian schooling. And if we used a christian school we need to be careful in how we choose one. We narrowed it down to ACCS christian shcools or homeschooling. We decided on a Classical Christian School model for our kids. But Santa Cruz does not have an ACCS Classical Christian school. So why not start one! We have been working hard for the last year on making this possible for the now present school year and are so amazed that we are starting in two days!!! We have so many amazing families on board and have been meeting for the last 9 months over soup to pray and plan for this big day. And here it is and it seems that we are actually ready for it! We have amazing teachers and amazing families and amazing curriculum. I really do wish that I could go back and learn the classical method. I am so excited that my children will be blessed with this education and it is definitely being built on faithful families committed to this vision for our children and community. The Classical model is old and tried and we have met many who have graduated from these schools and have been more then convinced of the amazing fruit that goes with it! We are starting from scratch and are encouraged by the many, many schools that have gone before us the same way and are now thriving. We are a little plant, a young plant, but we are in good soil and have plenty of sunlight and water and many tending to the care and growth so that one day we will be strong and able to bring shade to many! The name of the school is St. Abrahams and we are still working on a school logo. But be assured that I will post it as soon as we have one and will probably try and sell you a T-Shirt at some point this year! So here we go on a new adventure and are really excited for this coming year and spending it at St. Abrahams!
